FY2023 was dominated by two themes: medicinal cannabis at the top end, and independent breweries filling out the field. Food brands with genuine direct-to-consumer traction also featured strongly. These are the ten largest Birchal raises that closed in the 2023 financial year (1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023), by total raised.
1. Cannaponics — $4,893,838 from 2,828 investors. The WA medicinal-cannabis pioneer led the year with a near-$4.9 million raise and a crowd of more than 2,800 - the first of two raises that would later earn it a place in our case studies.
2. Old Young's — $2,699,597 from 877 investors. The Swan Valley distillery turned its gin-and-vodka following into a $2.7 million round.
3. Your Mates Brewing Co. — $2,499,815 from 1,043 investors. The Sunshine Coast brewery hit a $2.5 million raise on the back of a fiercely local community.
4. Threadheads — $2,097,499 from 2,451 investors. The custom-apparel business drew one of the largest crowds of the year, with nearly 2,500 investors.
5. Our Cow — $2,042,800 from 1,119 investors. The direct-to-consumer ethical-meat marketplace cleared $2 million, connecting farmers to households.
6. Roogenic — $1,644,956 from 1,364 investors. The native-botanical wellness and tea brand converted a large community of backers.
7. evee — $1,575,352 from 621 investors. The electric-vehicle rental marketplace brought a cleantech-meets-travel angle to the leaderboard.
8. Blackflag Brewing — $1,315,101 from 667 investors. Another independent brewery to feature in a strong year for the category.
9. Seabin — $1,063,644 from 1,110 investors. The ocean-plastic capture company returned to the crowd that had backed its environmental mission.
10. Medicann Health — $1,047,674 from 686 investors. A medicinal-cannabis company rounding out a top ten bookended by the category.
FY2023 underlined how powerful a built-in community is: breweries, apparel and DTC food brands all turned existing customers into shareholders.
