Reckless Brewing Co: how a women-led brewery from Bathurst is scaling award-winning beer

Back to Blogs

Reckless Brewing Co was built to challenge the status quo of Australian beer. A women-led independent brewery based in Bathurst, in regional New South Wales, Reckless makes award-winning beers for everyday drinkers and has grown, in just a few short years, into one of the country's most recognised women-owned breweries. After completing a Birchal equity crowdfunding campaign, it is now setting its sights on a national stage.

From a first pour to a brewery of its own

Like a lot of the best beer stories, Reckless started small. The company released its first beer in late 2019, right before the world turned upside down, and rather than retreat it kept building. Since then it has gone from a fledgling label to operating its own physical brewery in Bathurst, complete with a flagship venue that is now trading at capacity. For a regional independent, that progression, from contract-brewed beginnings to a home of its own with a thriving taproom, is no small feat, and it has been done the hard way: one pour, one regular, and one festival at a time.

That taproom matters more than it might appear. Across the industry, the venue has quietly become the financial engine of modern craft brewing, turning a keg of beer into an experience rather than just a wholesale product. Reckless having its flagship venue full is both a revenue story and a brand story, giving the brewery a direct line to the drinkers who become its most loyal advocates.

Built different: a women-led independent

Reckless stands out in a category not known for its diversity. Australian craft beer is overwhelmingly male-led, and a women-led independent brewery building genuine national traction is still rare. Reckless leans into that identity, positioning itself as a brewery built to do things differently while keeping the beer firmly at the centre. The focus has always been on approachable, well-made beers for everyday drinkers, rather than chasing novelty for its own sake.

Award-winning beer with national ambitions

The quality has been recognised where it counts. Reckless has collected multiple national champion beers, including a Champion XPA at the 2023 Australian International Beer Awards, one of the most respected judging programs in the region. Awards like that do real work for a small brewery: they validate the liquid, open doors with venues and distributors, and give beer lovers a reason to seek the brand out. Combined with a loyal local following, that recognition has helped Reckless build the kind of national interest that makes an expansion push realistic rather than aspirational.

The independent beer landscape

The timing is notable because independent brewers are operating in a genuinely tough environment. Rising costs, shifting drinking habits and a highly concentrated market all weigh on small producers. Two global-owned giants account for the lion's share of Australian beer sales, and long-running exclusive arrangements with venues can make it hard for independents to win taps. Independent breweries punch well above their weight on jobs and contribution to local economies while holding only a modest slice of total sales. In that context, a brewery that has stayed independent, kept winning awards, and managed its finances conservatively is doing something right, and the capital to scale could not come at a more important moment.

A community raise to fuel the next chapter

To power its expansion, Reckless turned to the people who know it best: its community. The brewery raised $513,068 from 236 investors through its Birchal equity crowdfunding campaign, which closed in March 2026. Equity crowdfunding suits a business like this well. It converts customers and supporters into shareholders, deepening the relationship at exactly the moment the company is asking them to help spread the word. Every new investor has a real reason to order a Reckless beer at the bar, recommend it to a mate, and champion the brand in their own circles.

The funds are earmarked for the practical work of scaling: lifting brewing capacity to meet demand, and broadening distribution so the beers can reach drinkers well beyond the Central West. For a brewery that has already proven it can make award-winning beer and run a venue at capacity, the next challenge is largely one of reach, and that is what this raise is designed to unlock.

It is also a vote of confidence from the community Reckless has spent years building. Regional breweries tend to occupy a special place in their towns, acting as gathering spots, employers and sources of local pride as much as producers of beer. By offering ownership to that community, Reckless has tied its growth to the people most invested in seeing it succeed, and given a new group of shareholders a personal stake in every keg that leaves Bathurst.

What is next

With fresh capital and a growing register of invested supporters behind it, Reckless is focused on scaling production and expanding its national footprint, getting more of its award-winning beer into more venues and more hands around the country. It is the next chapter for a brewery that has built its name by backing itself, and now has a community of shareholders backing it too.
