How close are we to affordable childcare? While yesterday’s Federal Budget has gone a long way to addressing the high costs of childcare, it does remain a major deterrent for parents getting back to work. In Australia we have no definition of affordability for childcare. However in the US, it is defined as spending no more than 7% of your household income. An analysis by the ABC has found that even with the subsidies, 41 per cent of families with one child aged under five years old will continue to spend more than this.
