So I thought I would share for the last time our weekly commonly asked questions!
What's your history Ash and why are you passionate about this problem?
Well it's a simple one, back in 2009 I started at a little Temp Fence company in Tullamarine as a sales rep. I was employee number 7 and we were turning over $1m a year. Good but not great. But I saw a real opportunity there as the owners were tech and growth focused and had a lets just do stuff attitude. This completely aligned to me. So I headed up the sales and helped drive growth of that business from $1m p/a in 2009 to $89m p/a in 2019. We did it by thinking strategically, targeting growth markets like events, major projects, civil construction. Knowing our lane and being the best at it and making something complex and annoying into something simple. Also I learned alot about the power of subcontracting and how that can really help grow your margins vs carrying a tone of costs. (Thus our business model). But the big thing for me was that I saw the amount of work that went into strategic planning and it went absolutely nowhere as we were growing fast. It was mind blowing to see state managers spending months working on a strategy to present to a board for 30 minutes and forget about. I know we needed to fix the problem. So I decided in 2019 I did my time, I wanted to forge my own path and it led me here.
Compared to other products on Birchal, it is a bit different, they tend to have more consumer facing products, why Birchal?
Simple, it made sense to us. Fundraising is a time consuming activity and in the tech market especially, funding is down and a super long drawn out process. Especially on the companies chasing big bucks. We aren’t doing that, we don’t need millions of dollars at the moment, we are focused on growth capital and betting on ourselves to hit our goals (Goal setting is kinda our thing). Our vision is that we can grow the business to be profitable and scalable. We want to keep ourselves hungry! We want to zig whilst everyone else is zagging. Yes Birchal has more consuming facing products that are awesome, that is why we chose them to partner with, so we would stand out. We would give a different flavour of a business for their members to invest in. Investing in tech is so out of reach for so many people, so we wanted to make it accessible. Quickly we chose Birchal as well as we considered them to be the Rolls Royce of CSF in Australia and having our brand aligned with theirs is a no brainer.
